Horsham commemorated the start of World War one today (Monday 4) with a service in the town centre.
Mr O’Connell opened the commemorations by placing a bouquet of flowers on the Horsham war memorial before signing the memorial book and lighting a candle which was placed on the new commemorative stand in Horsham park in memory of those who were involved at home or on the front in First World War.
Mr O’Connell said: “I think it’s important as a district that we remember the great sacrifices that were made during the First World War both by those who died and those which survived.
“They fought and made the sacrifice for us so we could be here today.”
An exhibition on the history of the war is also open in the Park Barn building in the park but only for today.
