Concerns about new secondary school

SOME of Horsham’s most senior head teachers and principals were this week sending out a statement raising serious concerns about plans for a new free secondary school at Southwater.

The school, with a Christian ethos, is being proposed by Horsham Churches Together and the Oasis Trust - and could include a sixth form, depending on feedback from the community.

The County Times revealed the proposals at the end of last year.

Since then, the promoters of the scheme have been conducting a major consultation to determine local views - and to get potential parents to indicate if they would send their children there; a vital regulatory step if the plans are to move forward.

But the intervention this week of key head teachers, who are asking for a pause in the process so a range of questions can be answered, will cast fresh doubt over the plans.

They believe the process has been rushed and consultation has not been thorough enough.

For full reports on the head teachers’ statement, the latest on the consultation process, and expert analysis, buy the West Sussex County Times on Thursday (January 12).
