Collective oil buying popular topic in village

The cost of heating oil proved to be a popular subject for a number of Horsham District residents at an information meeting held in Cowfold by Horsham District Council earlier this month.

Around 40 people turned out on a chilly November evening to Cowfold Village Hall to hear how buying oil collectively could help them, as well as their friends and neighbours, save money.

Collective oil buying happens when a number of residents place an order for heating oil together.

The potential benefits include being able to negotiate a better rate with the oil suppliers.

It can also mean that oil deliveries can be coordinated and reduce the number of large oil tankers having to travel to rural country lanes.

Horsham District Council organised the event with very interesting presentations from two local oil clubs, both of which already have hundreds of local members.

The Environment Agency was also on hand to talk about measures residents can take to reduce the risk of loss of oil through leaks, and what to do in the event of an oil leak.

Andrew Baldwin, Horsham District Council cabinet member for the environment, said: “I am pleased that Horsham District Council was able to arrange this useful and informative event.

“I recommend that anyone who uses oil to heat their home should consider joining an oil club as they offer a way for people to save some money on their fuel bills.

“Living in a warm home will help to keep you healthy this winter.”
