A Mannings Heath Fine Art graduate has snagged The Midas Award 2012 for her impressive video and installation work exhibited at the Newlyn Art Gallery in Cornwall.
The University College Falmouth student, Rosanna Catterall, was shortlisted alongside seven other artists for the prestigious accolade.
As this year’s winner, Rosanna will receive a year’s supply of art materials and access to facilities at UCF to prepare for a solo show at Millennium Gallery, St Ives in the autumn of 2013
She said: “I am so thrilled to have won and am excited about the year ahead.
“Exhibiting at Newlyn Art Gallery has been such a great opportunity and experience.”
Rosanna’s practice is grounded in both video and installation work.
A recent exploration into the nature of the green screen within video has led to both elaborate green set ups and finding natural green compositions within her video work.
The videos can be encountered in the Newlyn Art Gallery’s stairwell and main gallery where monitors and projections onto suspended screens feature coloured balls.
“Here I have created a sense of near stillness or slow motion, drawing out a sense of waiting, where nothing may happen.
Now in its seventh year, The Midas Award is an initiative between Midas Construction, Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange, Millennium Gallery, St Ives and UCF.
The prize was created to give leverage to artist’s up-and-coming in the professional contemporary art world.
The Midas Award 2012 exhibition is open until November 24 with free admission.
Visitors can view works that span a range of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, video and modelling.
A solo show by last year’s winner, Alastair Barford, is also on display.
