Horsham District Council has given its support plans for a small development of 44 flats and houses on land north of Southwater.

At a meeting of the development control committee north on Tuesday, members considered the application by developer Barrett Southern Counties to build a mixture of one to five bedroom flats and houses at Martindale Farm, Worthing Road - formerly the site of a sand school and stables.

Planning officer Val Cheesman said the application before the committee was an improvement on previous versions and recommended permission be granted.

The development will provide also 16 affordable homes comprising of nine flats and seven houses.

However members echoed Ms Cheesman’s concerns about possible noise disturbance from the road, which prospective owners of some of the houses could face and requested these issues be sorted before permission is granted.

Claire Vickers (Con, Southwater) said: “I welcome the better layout and the affordable housing units and the mix (of housing).”

But she said she had ‘real concerns’ about the noise that might affect houses with gardens bordering Blakes Farm Road. John Chidlow (Con, Southwater) agreed.

Members delegated the application to officers with a view to approve.

In the delegation period officers will work with the developers and local members to resolve noise concerns and agree financial contributions. If these are not resolved it will come back to the committee.
