HORSHAM Liberal Democrat Party is putting its full weight behind councillors and campaigners fighting to keep Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre.

Belinda Walters, local Liberal Democrat chairman, said: “Our councillors on the district council spoke forcefully at the recent cabinet meeting against the proposal to close the centre, but failed to convince the Conservative cabinet.

“The whole of the local Liberal Democrat Party will now fully back our councillors and the community to try to save the centre.

“The whole country is talking about rising rates of obesity in children and the need for people to exercise from their school days into adulthood and old age to remain in good health and to keep fit in later years.

“Yet here is a council with a popular, well-used leisure centre offering facilities and programmes to suit all interests, all age groups and all levels of fitness.

“It also happens to be in easy range of a large number of local residents and right in the middle of a future development site for an extra 2,500 houses.

“Only a Conservative-run council like Horsham District Council would think it was a good idea to close such a centre.

“The Tories have got it wrong once again, out of touch and under-estimating the strength of feeling from users who live across the district and beyond.

“Horsham Liberal Democrats support the fight to stop the closure. As with other campaigns we will do everything we can to save the centre.”
