Screwfix – which has a store in Horsham - has once again launched its annual search to find Britain’s Top Tradesman, the brilliant builders, helpful handymen, exceptional electricians and perfect plumbers that keep the UK’s homes and businesses in top condition.

Maybe you’ve re-trained this year and have gained new qualifications, or invested in new technology to kick-start your business? Have you proudly nurtured an apprentice into your trade?

Perhaps you have done a fantastic or unusual job for one of your customers; fixed a serious problem for them or even helped out in an emergency situation? Or do you run your business with customers in mind, by offering transparent pricing, free quotes or on a no fix no fee basis.

No matter what the reason, tradesmen from across the region are invited to enter – with finalists from around the country going head to head to be named the best in Britain.

Not only will this year’s winner grab the keys to a Renault van, worth around £27,000, they will also wear the crown of the nation’s number one tradesman.

In 2011, plumber Paul Martin, 39, from Essex, beat more than 3,000 entries to win the title.

As well as operating on a ‘no fix no fee’ basis, he also demonstrated how he goes that extra mile for his customers.

Paul gave one brilliant example of saving an elderly customer’s life by taking her to hospital when she fell ill, and waiting with her to make sure she was taken care of.

He said: “Winning Britain’s Top Tradesman has helped me through a tough financial year. It has attracted valued customers, giving them peace of mind that the work will be done to a high standard.

“The van I won has been great, making me more able to get out to my customers, and I don’t have to pay as much for fuel as it is more efficient than my old banger.

“It’s such a brilliant title to have and has opened many doors for me, bringing new opportunities to boost my business. People stop me in the street to congratulate me and say they have spotted me in the paper, asking me for quotes for a job there and then. Some customers have even kept the paper clippings so they know who to phone when they need a job doing.

“I would recommend any tradesman to enter, if you know you do a good job and believe in what you do you could be in my position in twelve months time, with a successful business, fantastic title and brand new van!”

John Mewett, marketing director at Screwfix, said: “The past twelve months have seen many tradesmen diversify and experiment to improve their business - from embracing new technology to be more efficient, to welcoming young apprentices into their business.

“Tradesmen really are the foundation of any community, ensuring homes and businesses are fit for purpose. This competition has been created to recognise them and the vital work they carry out.”

Entries are open until 5th October 2012, with regional finalists going head to head.

The national final will be in November, with the overall winner being named Britain’s Top Tradesman 2012.
