A water infrastructure specialist in West Sussex has won a national health and safety from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents award for the third year running.

Barhale Trant Utilities, which has an office in Horsham, constructed the Hardham Reservoir in Pulborough for Southern Water, work cited as a model of excellence.

The company carries out mechanical and electrical process improvements to hundreds of Southern Water assets, such as treatment works and pumping stations, across Sussex, Hampshire and Kent.

BTU was also engaged in a ten-month project, on behalf of Southern Water, to reduce the potential odour nuisance from Horsham’s wastewater treatment works in advance of a nearby residential development scheme.

David Rawlins, awards manager at RoSPA, said: “We congratulate BTU on its success and encourage it, and all our other winners, to remain committed to safety and health, an approach that is well recognised to be good for workers and the bottom line.”

The award was presented to Glen Carlin, BTU’s health and safety manager, at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.

BTU, formed in June 2009, employs 150 people with a headquarters at Havant, a fabrication plant at Marchwood, and a satellite office in Horsham.
