A SURVEY of all three main leisure centres in the Horsham area has been commissioned by the district council as part of its process of re-letting management contracts in 2012.
This has been made clear in the ‘Leisure Futures’ report drawn up by Kit Campbell Associates for Horsham District Council at a cost of £6,000.
The report - which is being used as the basis for proposals to close and demolish Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre - states that Steyning Leisure Centre is also ‘reaching a critical age’.
And it states that the council’s survey of leisure centres covering the Pavilions in The Park, Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre, Steyning Leisure Centre and Billingshurst Leisure Centre could also be used to develop ‘a list of reinvestment needs’ which could be supported by the government’s Community Infrastructure Levy which allows local authorities to allocate funds for ‘repairing failing existing infrastructure’.
Last Friday the County Times asked Horsham District Council to clarify what exactly the infrastructure levy was, if the survey had been completed into all the leisure centres and, if so, what was on its list of ‘reinvestment needs’.
A spokesperson for the council said: “We continue to answer a number of questions from Horsham’s media about the Leisure Futures Study - as well as other council matters – and, of course, will always try to do so.
“Owing to the detailed nature of some of the enquiries received about the Leisure Futures Study, we are currently finding that it is not always possible to reply with a fully researched answer within press deadlines.
“We are keen to provide all information asked of us to work with the press in doing so.”
