A NATIONALLY renowned West Sussex man will be the first artist to receive a ‘True Englishman’ award from the St George’s Day Club in London TODAY (Monday April 23).

David Shepherd, 81 this week, received the award as its 17th recipient from Sir Stephen Dalton, chief of the Air Staff.

He said: “I am so very delighted to be awarded this honour when there are so many deserving people out there. I am compulsively patriotic and passionately proud to be English.”

David’s landscape and wildlife painting drove him to conservation work, launching TigerTime in 2011 to save the wild tiger and the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation in 1984.

He has also done portraits for The Queen.

Previous winners include Sir Roger Bannister, Sir Ian Botham, Sir Rannulph Fiennes and Lawrence Dallaglio.
