ARCTIC and Antarctic explorer Geoff Somers shared his experiences of the two polar regions with children from Years 5 and 6 at Castlewood Primary School in Southwater.

He explained about the differences in the two polar regions – discussing the different wildlife and weather conditions in each.

The children at the school in Castlewood Road learned about Captain Scott’s explorations and compared the conditions in the early 1900s with those of today.

Children were able to try on clothes which were suitable for very cold temperatures and looked at equipment which would be suitable for such an adventure.

Class teacher Lauren Brown said: “Geoff’s visit brought our topic alive for the children as he was able to share his vast experience with them.

“They enjoyed being able to hear about Geoff’s first-hand experience and the challenges that he had faced and overcome.”

Over the course of almost 30 years from 1972-2001, Geoff, from Keswick in Cumbria, explored much of the length and breadth of the globe.

His achievements include the near 4,000 mile traverse across the Antarctic’s greatest axis.

In 1994 he was awarded the MBE for his services to ‘Education and Antarctic exploration’.
