Overflowing bins in West Street, Horsham a result of staff absentees

The maintenance of bins in some areas of Horsham town centre has been affected by two members of staff being on long-term sickness-related absences.

At Wednesday’s (April 23) cabinet meeting of Horsham District Council, Andrew Baldwin (Con, Holbrook East) confirmed that of the council’s six staff working to clean the town centre, two have been absent.

His comment followed a remark from Godfrey Newman (LDem, Forest) about bins overflowing with litter on West Street.

Mr Newman said: “Every single bin was overflowing on a Saturday. I do worry that if we try to promote the town we have to make sure a basic thing like that is actually done.”

Mr Baldwin said: “I hope it is a temporary blip because we have increased the resources.

“Six people work to keep the town clean and two have been on long-term sickness. It usually gets done - it doesn’t always, but it should do.

“They used to finish at 3 on a Saturday and now we have one or two that are still around until 6:00.”
