A 75-year-old man from Warninglid is among the final four people across the country to be hailed Great Britain’s Greatest Neighbour.
Alan Brown, an ex-school teacher who ‘always has time for his neighbours’, was nominated for the award by his neighbour, Bob Clark.
Bob said: “Alan is a 75 year old ex-school teacher, who always has time for his neighbours.
“He looks after a number of elderly and disabled villagers, doing their weekly shopping, tidying up their gardens and bringing them fresh produce from his allotment.
“He’s a keen supporter of the village activities and always first to volunteer his services – a real asset to our neighbourhood.”
Alan added: “Bob came and told me what I won and I had no idea I’d been nominated, I thought it was absolutely wonderful.
“I don’t really see what I do as helping people, I enjoy it! I think it’s the talking to people who are on their own that really makes a difference.”
Bob and Alan have received a cheque for £100, while Alan is now in the running to receive a cheque for £1,000 and a year’s free home insurance, courtesy of Swinton Insurance.
Voting on Swinton’s greatest neighbour campaign closes today (Friday August 30).
