Charity collecters warn about rogue firms in Horsham

A charity clothing collector is warning Horsham residents to watch out for bogus companies operating in the area.

The County Times has heard from a Clothes Aid worker who collects used clothes in Horsham and Crawley.

He said he has noticed a growing problem with unauthorised firms leaving clothing collection bags on doorsteps in the town.

Michael Lomotey of Clothes Aid said Horsham District Council’s licensing officers had been ‘very helpful’, but probably lacked the resources to tackle the problem effectively.

The charity’s advice to people thinking about filling a donation bag is to look for the charity number which a legitimate collector will have on their bag. You can check this number against the Charity Commission’s website at: www.charity-commission.gov.uk

Genuine collectors are also likely to have a working contact number on their literature, and to display the FRSB’s tick logo, showing that they have signed up for monitoring by the FundRaising Standards Board.
