Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne, has announced her intention to appoint Steve Waight as a full-time Deputy Police & Crime Commissioner, to be paid an annual salary of £45,000
Mr Waight is the former chair of the Sussex Police Authority and Worthing bourough councillor in West Sussex.
Commenting on the proposed appointment commissioner Bourne said: “When I was elected I chose to get on and do the job before making any decisions about appointing a potential Deputy.
“It is now 10 weeks since the election and during that time there has been a lot of discussion nationally about Police & Crime Commissioners and new appointments to their teams.
“Sussex is a large area and there are many calls on my time. I am convinced the support of a Deputy is absolutely necessary to help ensure I can do the best job possible for residents during my time in office.
“I have inherited a small team [8 full time staff] previously employed by Sussex Police Authority who are doing a great job.
“Steve’s experience and links with the local community as former chairman of the Police Authority and a local councillor will be an invaluable addition to the team.
“He will play a vital role in supporting me in working with the police, partners and the public to ensure we are all safer in Sussex.”
Mr Waight’s appointment is subject to a confirmation hearing by the Police & Crime Panel on 7 February.
