PUPILS at Hillcrest Slinfold residential school competed in a Christmas cake competition.

The boys aged between 11 and 17 worked over the past few weeks to design their cakes and then created them - some spent up to five hours decorating them.

The cakes ranged from ski-ing penguins to a fireplace scene and the winner was Nathan, who made a beautifully crafted Christmas log with festive mice crawling around it.

Billingshurst cake maker Amy Hayes, who runs The Little Cakery, and the school’s education consultant John Novak were the judges for the day.

John said: “The standard was really fantastic it was very difficult to chose the winner.”

Headteacher Chris Jackson added: “All the cakes were made individually. It went really well and the kids were fantastic.”

Hillcrest ‘offers an holistic model of care and education that is designed to help boys take control of their lives’, says the school’s mission statement.

“We endeavour to teach our young men how to achieve their potential and to prepare to manage their future,’’ it adds.
